A May Day Song

Writer's picture: Vincent BuckwalterVincent Buckwalter

In case you haven’t noticed the three of us, Herm, Vince, & Wayne take turns writing this little newsletter every couple of weeks.  We love staying in touch with you and giving you a wee bit of a window into our lives.  It’s my turn again.  How time flies.

Lots of excitement on the music front.  As we’ve said before, we are working on our first recording together in 45 years.  Each of us has recorded along the way on our own or with other bands.  Some of that music is up on our website hermandvince.com if you want to check it out.  We have not recorded together for a long long time.  I remember when Vince and I recorded our Hesston Tapes in 1979.  We were too young to feel the pressure or anxiety that is found in a recording studio, there was just the joy of putting our music on tape and sharing it with our friends.

My personal experience with recording has been one of great joy mixed with anxiety.  Anxiety comes from trying to make our music perfect, or at least the best it can be.  Joy comes from simply having the courage to do it and put it out there and see what happens.  Nothing of what I’ve done in the past is perfect, but for the most part, it makes me smile and brings me great joy when I remember and listen to it.  It’s a musical diary.

I see clients these days when I’m not playing music, most of them are bereavement clients, they have lost a loved one.  I know loss, we all do.  This week I was with a woman who had just lost a daughter, as most of you know we also lost a daughter.  I felt her total devastation, despair, helplessness, and hopelessness.  It made me cry.  She said, “It’s just not possible to be happy anymore.”  I remember that, so very well.  But I also remember the day I wrote the first song after Chloe died.  It was 2 years 6 months and 7 days later.  It brought me incredible joy remembering her vivacious smile as she danced in her schools May Day Celebration.  The song is called And There you Go and is on the Chloe and Me album on our website.  A May Day song!  I shared that song with my client and friend this week.  We cried together; she said, “It brings me hope.

As we record, we remember deep sorrow and unspeakable joy.  May the songs continue to offer Hope For Tomorow.  Stay tuned!
